Why the heck do we spend so much time in the brainstorming/planning phase of something?!
Is it because we want it to be just right? Like, “I just need to have this and that in place and I’ll be all set!” Or we have only a partial idea of how or what something needs to look like. Or perhaps we feel ill-equipped, “I just need to get to a place where I am this. Or, I don’t know anything about [X] so I’m not the right person for the job..”
All of the above for me!
Take for instance this blog post.. It’s my first official one ever. And, it only took 3 years to post. (Not to write!)
If you check out the origin story, you’ll see the idea behind this community is obviously important to me. So, WHY THE HECK HAS IT TAKEN SO LONG TO START?!
Let me just give you a few of the excuses I’ve had over the years.
- “I’m not a writer. Whenever I try, I just sit and stare at my screen..”
- “I need to finish setting up a website.”
- “I have laundry. Also I’m hungry, so there’s that.”
- “I need a clean house before I can focus on anything.” (This actually is true, however, it’s counter productive if I NEVER get anything else done!)
- “No one cares.”
- “I’m scared."
I know I have countless more. The point is, there’s always going to be something in the way of doing what you want to (or should) do!
The question is, when does starting your [thing] become more important than all of the distractions you can create for yourself?
Remember, there’s a difference between “urgent” and “important”.
I think we all have something we need to start (or pick back up again). Whether it’s something that’s been on your heart for years, or a goal you set at the beginning of this year. Either way, I want you to stop and think. I mean REALLY THINK..
Why is this important to me? How will my life, or the lives of others around me be better if I do [this]?
(Side note: Some of you have ideas that could become far bigger than you could imagine. Even with the potential to save lives. YOU NEED TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN!)
One last thing, I would love to hear if this resonated with any of you. If so, what do you want to start or continue to do in your life that you’ve found ways to avoid?
